Abstract: A kind of contrast enhancement method for image is proposed by Four-Scale of Adaptive Inverse Hyperbolic Tangent (4SAIHT) algorithm. 4SAIHT is used to enhance the contrast of an image. In order to avoid the expensive time for traditional contrast enhancement algorithms, which search optimal gray transform parameters in the whole gray transform parameters space, a new criterion is proposed with sub-band processing. Gray transform parameters space is respectively determined by different contrast types, which shrinks gray transform parameters space greatly. Nonlinear transform parameters are based on multi-scales gain and bias parameters algorithm so as to obtain optimal gray transform parameters. In order to calculate sub-band mean and variance in the whole image to determined multi-scales gain and bias parameters. We provide experimental results from the application of our technique to images, which are hard to be contrasted by other conventional techniques. Experimental results show that the new algorithm is able to adaptively enhance the contrast for vary images. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. (11 refs)
